About this Event
Connect the mistakes of the past with the realities in the present, and better appreciate your role as stewards of fair housing for everyone. Learn about the new HUD reasonable accommodation guidelines, service dogs and emotional support animals in rental housing, and finish with a lesson on advertising and best practices in using the Equal Housing logo as well as words to avoid when creating marketing copy.
This course will take you through history to when and how discrimination started in America to the lasting effects still felt today from Jim Crow laws, redlining, blockbusting, and steering. It will demonstrate how REALTORS® are the vehicle of change and the guardians of equality in housing.
We'll take a deep dive into Assistive Animals and discuss the different types of animals and associated rights in detail. We'll review HUD guideline FHEO-2020-01 - how to determine a person's eligibility to have an Assistive Animal in a rental home or as a reasonable accommodation to HOA CC&Rs. You'll learn the difference between the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Federal Fair Housing Act as it applies to Assistive Animals.
The final focus of the class is that words matter and consistency is essential. We'll review terms that are dangerous to use in marketing copy and words in the safe zone and discuss disparate impact.
